Adventure Vacation Destinations in the US

When adrenaline junkies think of vacations they don’t usually think hotels and trolley rides around the town. They think of rappelling down sheer cliffs or gazing at grizzlies from mere feet away or parasailing along the beaches from high in the air. The United States is full of adventure destinations, so why not come and play, wild style?

Wild and Wet

Kodiak Island, Alaska

Kodiak Island, Alaska

Alaska is a wild and wonderful playground for those seeking something extraordinary to do.  Head to Juneau, Alaska to experience Mendenhall Glacier. Here, visitors can dog sled across the ice or hike the 45-minutes trek to the waterfalls.

Not enough adventure? Well, how about going to see the Island of Kodiak… and the enormous Kodiak bears? Close kin to the grizzly, these bears are located all over the island. Take a guided tour to the Katmai coast and watch the bears snatch salmon from the rivers. The very brave can go on fishing expeditions for the salmon, but be ready for the bears to fight you for that catch!

Hiking and Climbing

Badlands National Park, South Dakota

The Badlands of South Dakota offer a beauty all of its own, complete with exhilarating hiking and climbing opportunities. Novice families can scramble over the smaller formations, grappling for hand holds and jumping down from the tops. Ladders provide access to the higher rocks and there are great places for the advanced climbers to be challenged to their limits. Hike through to the Badland’s Wall to see geologic formations. Trek through Sage Creek Wilderness Area to see black-footed ferrets and big horn sheep.

Parasiling

Parasailing, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Parasailing, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

For beach lovers who want some heart-pumping excitement, head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and book a flight above the ocean on a para-sailing adventure. Hit heights of up to 500 ft while viewing the waves crashing into the shoreline. Or book a deep-sea fishing excursion and try your hand at fighting in a huge blue Marlin.

Big-Foot sighting

For those who enjoy adventure with a shock-value, try a ‘Squatch Watch’ in WVA. Whether you are big-foot believers or skeptics, these night traipses through dense forest and gorges all over West Virginia will have your heart pumping and your hairs on end. Go with amateurs or actual big-foot groups looking for prints, broken branches and sightings. Listen for screams and feel the excitement down to your very bones. There are big-foot sightings world-wide, however, in the continental US, WVA is one of the top places for sightings.  Randolph county is the best place to start with seven individual sightings.

Caves Exploration

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Do you like the dark, but maybe not the thought of Bigfoot? The Mammoth Caves of Kentucky are perfect places to go spelunking. Mammoth Cave system is the longest one in the world. Spelunkers can follow trails underground, past rivers and rock formations. Rappel down step slopes in the pitch dark. See fish who never see daylight. Awe at the magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. All while deep underground.

Skywalk

Grand Canyon Skywalk, Arizona

The Grand Canyon in Arizona is fascinating just in itself. Great valleys gouged out eons ago expose rock walls, canyons and rivers. But if that is not enough to hold your interest, then how about stepping out over the canyon? The Grand Canyon Skywalk allows visitors to walk out approximately 70ft over the canyon and view the area below…way below. The Skywalk is see-through, allowing for the feeling of actually hovering in the air over the canyon.

Volcano Exploration

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

Hawaii is a vacation hot-spot with its great surfing, gorgeous world-class beaches and luxury accommodations. But, Hawaii also holds some great volcano explorations. Drive from the top of Kilauea and along the Chain of Craters Road where you can pass the top of the volcano, see lava flowing to the ocean and look for lava fields.  Step out onto the cliffs and watch the sea steam as the liquid fire hits it.

For the ultimate in great thrills, hang with the great white sharks…literally. The Farallon Islands off the California coast are a great place to go cage diving with huge great whites. You don’t even have to be a diver to experience this opportunity.  Using the hookah diving system, you will be connected to an air supply without the cumbersome tanks. Inside the cage you can view sharks as large as cars. With murky and cold shark-filled waters, you will feel like a bird in a cage- with the cat licking its lips.
