If you are holidaying in the UK this summer, the kids are bound to have a visit to a theme park on their ‘ to do’ list. Of course, theme parks are not just for children as there are lots of adrenaline inducing rides for adults. Whether you are looking for a short day trip or a week long stay, there is something for all families. Here is a rundown of the top ten UK theme parks to visit.
1. Alton Towers Resort
Arguably the best theme park of all, with award winning rides, live shows and high class Water Park. This Staffordshire attraction has its own hotel and spa, so splash out on a short break to ensure that you don’t miss any of the fun. With the newly built Cbeebies Land, this is a great place to take younger children and toddlers. Angry Birds fans will find it hard to tear themselves away from the new 4D ride and with new rides added most years, Alton Towers see customers returning year upon year.
2. Thorpe Park Resort
This famous Sussex theme park is just 20 miles outside of London, so is great for a quick getaway from the city. As well as dozens of high octane rides and childrens’ attractions, the park hosts live music on Saturday evenings and has many good restaurants and shops that will keep you busy for a few days. The site has an onsite hotel, to help you get the most out of your stay.
3. Paultons Theme Park
Famous for being the home of Peppa Pig World, this Hampshire park boasts over 60 rides as well as a large aqua park, family friendly entertainment and a fun train to get you from point A to B. There is no onsite hotel but the park works with good local hotels to come up with short break packages to suit all prices. There is also a 4D cinema onsite as well as evening family entertainment, if you are staying overnight.
4. Gulliver’s World
Smaller than some of the major UK theme parks but packed full of fun for all of the family, Gulliver’s World has been a firm favorite for 36 years. Parents of younger children and toddlers are particularly attracted to this resort as it specializes in rides for this age group. Older children will enjoy Water Park and the fabulous Nerf Zone. There is no hotel attached but you will find plenty of value for money hotels and B&Bs in and around Warrington.
5. Chessington World of Adventures
With a zoo, sea life center and a theme park that boasts 10 individual zones plus over 40 rides and attractions, Chessington is jam packed with fun. Choose between ‘ Pirate Cove ‘, ‘ Wild Asia’ and ‘ Dragon Land’ or wear yourself and visit all lands then put your feet up for a well-earned rest in one of the resort hotels. The Azteca Hotel is brand new for 2014 and will see you explore the mysteries of the ancient Aztec temple ruins, overlooking mischievous monkeys and colorful birds and encounter some of the jungle’s most exotic creatures.
6. Blackpool Pleasure Beach
This famous North West beach is home to one of the oldest fairgrounds in the UK. The ‘ Big One’ sees over 1800 people take a full on adrenaline rush every day. The beach is home to Nickelodeon Land and the Wallace and Gromit ‘ thrill-o-matic ‘. Visit between 29th August and 9th November for the famous illuminations, where over 10k of lights will light up the town. Make a weekend or even a week out of your stay, by exploring the famous beach, tower and the many shops where you can pick up a stick of famous Blackpool rock.
7. Drayton Manor Theme Park
With an onsite camping and caravan park, Drayton Manor is ideal for a short break for a family holiday. Home to Thomas Land as well as dozens of rides for all ages, this Staffordshire theme park offers more than just rollercoasters. Channel 5’s Milkshake children’s TV channel also has a zone at the park, where you can meet many of the TV show’s well-loved characters, such as Fireman Sam.
Set in 150 acres of woodland and boasting 55 rides, this famous Windsor park is simply amazing. Educational as well as fun, the site is home to Pharaoh Land, Adventure Land and Land of The Vikings, to name but a few. The park is very interactive, with a host of workshops for all of the family, including this years ‘ Big Digger Challenge’. The resort hotel is heaven for children, with cool themed rooms, such as a pirate room or adventure room. This resort definitely has the wow factor.
9. Flamingo Land Resort
This Yorkshire resort is so much fun and is a reminder of the nostalgic days of UK family holidays rather than the common European trips that we are used to now. Journey through The Lost Kingdom’s vast African plains, the clear blue skies of Swoosh! and the wet and wacky world of Splosh! Accommodation is very reasonable and very family friendly.
10. Southport Pleasureland
Another Northwest favourite and again very reasonable for families. Stay at the nearby Pontins resort or try some traditional family camping at one of the nearby caravan parks. Pleasureland is home to dozens of rides as well as traditional seaside arcades and fairground games. Close to both Liverpool and Manchester, Southport offers great activities for the family to enjoy a weeklong stay.
